What Is a Verified Review? Why Purchase Verification Matters in 2026

A verified review connects three things that most review platforms keep separate:

Online reviews are broken. In 2022 alone, Trustpilot removed 2.7 million fake reviews from its platform. Amazon battles an endless flood of paid and incentivized reviews. Yelp's recommendation software struggles to separate genuine experiences from noise. The fundamental problem: anyone can write a review, whether they purchased the product or not.

When a review platform verifies a review, it checks that all three align: the reviewer is the person who paid, the purchase actually happened, and the review hasn't been modified.

# How most platforms "verify" reviews (and why it fails)

Trustpilot, Google Reviews, and most other platforms offer an "invitation" system: businesses can email customers and ask them to leave a review. But critically, these platforms also allow anyone to leave a review without an invitation. Someone who never purchased from you can post a review on Trustpilot — and unless you flag it and prove it's fake, it stays up.

  5. The customer clicks the link, writes their review, and submits it. The review is cryptographically signed at the moment of submission.
